An important observation

This tweet came out of the Grace Hopper 2011 conference going on right now in Portland.

That is a very interesting point. And I'm not sure how to fix it. If CompSci is used here as a shorthand for software engineering, this is a very valid point. Software Engineering is very much a creative field, even an intuitive one at times, but that's not the perception it gets.

I don't know how to fix that.

It seems like everywhere I go (at work in the I.T. field), I'm surrounded by current/former musicians, artists, and singers. Almost all male. It's a natural connection, I find.

My wife is extremely smart (way more than me) and incredibly creative (I'd say only a tad less than me); I keep telling her she's be an incredible I.T. worker, but she is completely bored by the notion (though she has lots of other creative and intellectual pursuits).

I guess I'm not bothered by it, but I share your notion. To each their own, really.

However, I'm doing my best to share everything I can with my daughter and foster her curiosity as much as possible (especially about science/computers and solutions), because I think that's where it truly begins.
