Spam numbers

The following came out in the "Academic Technology News" yesterday:
To put the new spam filtering in perspective, consider the following: WWU errs on the side of caution to ensure that we do not filter any legitimate email; even with this 'cautionary' configuration more than 80% of all inbound email to campus is filtered out of our email system as known spam, compared to around 65% with our previous solution. In terms of numbers, that means that the staggering number of 1.3 million spam emails are filtered from your incoming mail each day.

Number of emails received: 1.6 million
Number of messages filtered: 1.3 million
Number of messages delivered: 0.3 million
There you have it. 1.6 million messages a day! Our Exchange system has around 6000 email accounts.

Hmmm... Blocking 80% is great and all, but spam to my outlook account outnumbers legitimate email 20:1. Granted, I don't receive very much email there, but I've never publicized this email address either, and have only had it for two months.Any idea why spam isn't more proactively filtered to the "Junk e-mail" filter? Seems like it would be more effective to be strict and let the user sort it out.-Nick

That was one of the biggest questions we got when we switched to the new AV product. This product has to classes, SPAM, and HAM. There is no 'maybe' like with the old product. The old product sent the maybe stuff to the Junk Mail folder. This product doesn't use the Junk Mail folder at all, things that wind up there ended up there because of Outlook's in-built spam filters. The reason the spam settings aren't more strict has a lot to do with politics. That's not something I can talk about in detail on a public blog.As for getting spam without ever publishing your email address. Never fear. We did it for you. I'm assured that the page has been configured to prevent harvesting. Asssured.

We had the same thing happen. All of our email addresses were posted on our website. It's never been the same since. My mailbox has been dirtied forever.
